[image]Fires in South Asia - NASA image courtesy the Goddard Space Flight Center
Widespread agricultural (slash-and-burn) fires across northeastern India and Myanmar on the afternoon of March 20, 2006, left a shroud of smoke hanging over the landscape the following morning. These images of the area were captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra (March 21) and Aqua (March 20) satellites. Fires have been burning throughout the region since February, as people prepare for spring planting...

[image]Fires in South Asia - NASA image by Jeff Schmaltz, Goddard Space Flight Center.
In the hilly terrain of northeastern India and northwestern Myanmar, people practice slash-and-burn cultivation in the region’s tropical forests. The activity has created a mosaic of cleared fields and open-canopy forests in various stages of regrowth. This image of the area was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on March 10, 2006, during the burning season, which takes places mostly in February and March...

[image]Fires in Southeast Asia - Image by Jesse Allen, based on data from the NASA-GSFC
In Southeast Asia, thousands of fires were spread across Myanmar and Thailand on March 22, 2004. In this image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite, fires have been marked in yellow. The smoke from the fires can be seen clearly against a backdrop of low clouds over the eastern half of the scene. The widespread nature of the fires suggests that they are being set intentionally for agricultural purposes...

Scores of fires were burning in northeastern India, Myanmar, and Thailand on February 27, 2006. Agricultural fires commonly occur here in the late winter (Northern Hemisphere), as farmers clear fields to prepare for new planting. Although agricultural fires are not necessarily immediately hazardous, such large-scale burning can have a strong impact on weather, climate, human health, and natural resources...

The skies were hazy over Bangladesh, northeastern India, and Myanmar on March 8, 2006, as the smoke from hundreds of fires rose into the air. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua detected fires (marked in red) in high concentrations in northeast India to the south of the Brahmaputra River (tan ribbon cutting across the upper left corner) as well as in the hilly terrain at the border of India and Myanmar...

Recently Dave was in Myanmar (Burma) to catch up with his friend Run Lian with whom he had a longstanding invitation to visit. In this podcast they chew the rag about some of the less publicized details of the amazing work of God in that country. The Chin state, being the size of Leinster, experienced a major visitation from God in the 1970's to such an extent that the entire northern portion experienced a wholesale conversion...

Rice is the most important food grain in Burma (Myanmar). Nearly 60 percent of the country's total rice crop comes from the 4 states that occupy the Irrawaddy River Delta and adjacent coastline to the east, around the Gulf of Martaban. These areas suffered the worst devastation from the passage of Cyclone Nargis in early May 2008. According to a report from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), the impacts on food supplies and rice production this year could be severe...

As Anthony debriefs Dave following his recent trip to Burma / Myanmar we hear of a particular work happening in the house of his friend Run Lian as well as more details about the Holy Spirit visitation to Chin State. If we, in Ireland, seek the Lord perhaps we too can expect such a nation transformation remembering that, at the end of the day, revival is in the hands of God.

South of Myanmar (top center) sunglint brightens the Andaman Sea, highlighting the presence of internal waves--waves that move along underwater at the boundary between two ocean layers of different densities. The evidence of these very large waves is the presence of parallel rows of arcing lines scattered throughout the length of the image in the sunglint region in the image center. [image]Internal waves in the Andaman Sea off Myanmar - Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
The silvery reflection of the sun on the surface of the Andaman Sea reveals the internal waves that are common in this region. The waves form when the dense, lower layer of the ocean moves over an uneven section of the sea floor. The wave that results from the disturbance travels between the dense layer and the light layer of water above it, and ruffles the surface of the sea. Because the waves create large regions of alternating rough and smooth sea, they are visible from space...

[image]Smoke and Fires in Southeast Asia - Jeff Schmaltz
Scores of fires clog the sky above Bangladesh, east India, and Myanmar with thick white clouds of smoke. The green forests and plains of southeast Asia support the livelihoods of millions of the region's residents, often in the form of agricultural pursuits. One of the chief methods of ground-clearing for spring planting is fire - a cheap and highly effective, though dangerous and at times unpredictable tool...
